a psychostimulant drug that increases energy and decreases appetite; used to treat narcolepsy and some forms of depression; amphetamine seems to work on the central nervous system (CNS) indirectly by causing the release of biogenic amines from their storage sites in nerve terminals; amphetamines are commonly abused; the drug may taken orally, snorted, injected, or smoked; amphetamine are psychologically addicting and can cause elevated mood, increased wakefulness, concentration, physical performance and a feeling of well-being; with sustained use, may cause hallucinations and delusions and the enhanced alertness effects and increased heart rate diminish.
